Viton® / FKM / FPM
These are three designations for the exact same high-end sealing material (fluoroelastomer).
They serve as the chemically resistant counterpart to EPDM and are used wherever aggressive media or mineral oils are involved.
Key properties of Viton / FKM / FPM
Viton® is the premium material for withstanding extreme chemical and thermal stress.
While EPDM, for instance, fails when exposed to oils and fuels, Viton retains its shape perfectly and ensures a reliable seal for tanks and all connections. Temperature range:
Permanently stable from -20°C to +200°C (briefly up to +250°C). Material properties:
Extremely gas-tight (prevents the escape of toxic or pungent vapors) and highly resistant to aging and ozone. Hardness:
Slightly harder and less elastic than EPDM, but mechanically extremely resistant to abrasion. Chemical Resistance
Choose Viton® / FKM / FPN specifically for demanding applications involving oily or chemical media:
Highly suitable for: Gasoline, diesel, heating oil, mineral oils, vegetable oils (cooking oils), greases, chlorinated hydrocarbons (e.g., perchloroethylene), aliphatics, and most concentrated acids.
Completely unsuitable for: Acetone, glycol-based brake fluids, polar solvents (esters, ethers, ketones), amines, and hot steam (Viton becomes brittle quickly under these conditions).
Use with IBC Containers & Adapters
Viton® seals (FKM / fluoroelastomer) represent the premium choice for safety in IBC containers and adapters,
as they offer extreme resistance to aggressive chemicals, acids, alkalis, oils, and fuels.
While standard seals made of materials like EPDM or PE quickly swell or become brittle when exposed to hydrocarbons and solvents, Viton retains its shape perfectly and remains leak-free.
Installation Tips
Avoiding mechanical overload is the most important factor for the secure installation of Viton® seals (FKM) on IBC containers and adapters.
Since the material is highly elastic, it creates a perfect seal even under low pressure.
Key steps for error-free installation
Clean the sealing surface: Remove any remnants of old seals, dirt, or media residue from the IBC valve thread and the adapter.
Check for flatness: Place the Viton seal perfectly flat inside the adapter. It must not ripple, become compressed, or protrude on one side. Center the thread:
Position the adapter straight onto the thread (e.g., S60x6) of the IBC tank. Screwing it on at an angle causes the seal to bind or tilt.
Hand-tighten only
Tighten the adapter strictly by hand. Unlike rigid PTFE, Viton does not require tools to create a seal.
No pipe wrenches: Do not use pliers or wrenches. Excessive pressure can squeeze the seal out of its groove, cut the material, and render it permanently unusable.
Visual inspection after initial filling: Check the connection for minor leaks shortly after it first comes into contact with the medium, and—if necessary—tighten it slightly by hand.
Note specific material properties: Do not stretch: Avoid unnecessarily stretching Viton O-rings or flat gaskets during installation, as this weakens the material structure. Lubricants:
If seals need lubrication for installation, use only Viton-compatible lubricants (such as silicone grease). Never use mineral oil-based greases if specifications are unclear, as some FKM compounds react adversely to certain additives.
Material comparison to help you choose
* VITON® / FKM / FPM: Perfect for oils, fuels, and hydrocarbons
* EPDM: Excellent resistance to polar media (water, acids, alkalis, acetone) and glycol-based brake fluid
* NBR: Ideal for rainwater, wastewater, acids, and liquid fertilizers
* PTFE / Teflon: The high-end solution for aggressive chemicals and fuels; extremely chemical-resistant but less elastic than rubber
